Single Cell Orchestra's Miguel Fierro is a extremity of the prolific San Francisco Bay Area experimental electronic residential district, which has produced artists such as Spacetime Continuum, Heavenly Music Corporation, Ambient Temple of Imagination, Jon Williams, and Charles Uzzell-Edwards. Working in all styles of electronica -- from the more straight-ahead society paraphernalia of his Zoe Magick work to the outward-bound ambient-electro of his Reflective releases and the mid-tempo head music of his 1996 Asphodel debut -- Fierro approaches each with a stress on rhythm, texture, and atmosphere. The son of a idle words drummer, Fierro grew up listing to post-bop and '70s jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, and began devising tracks after playing about with a friend's low-budget keyboard. After experimenting with a few bands (both electronic and differently), Fierro decided to go it solo, divine by his DJ comrade to try his hand at freestyle and house music production.

Fierro released his first tracks through West Coast dance staple Zoe Magick, with his "Convey Liberation" (from the "Liberated EP") becoming an tube classical and prefiguring the styles of lazy, instrumental "trip-hop" later popularized by the Mo'Wax, Wall of Sound, and Cup of Tea labels. From there, Fierro coupled up with Jonah Sharp's Reflective label, which released his "Angelic Science" EP in 1994 and the uncut sci-fi electro opera, Dead Vent 7, the next year. His self-titled debut full-length for the Asphodel relief, released in 1996, returned to the fond breakbeat expressive style of "Convey Liberation" (included on the album), as well as house and a more minimum trade name of environmental ambient. Fierro's to the highest degree tardy make for is a collaboration with Daum Bentley of Freaky Chakra, a full-on electro overdrive recorded subsequently a series of alive improv gigs which stone pitfall the two in a "Vs." scenario.

The 5 guys wHO receive chosen the slightly occult cognomen of the Juliana Theory to make up their band meet successfully transformed themselves from punk and hard-core kids restricted by the constraints of the emo genre into echt, credible musicians. Their songs display kinetics, skill, and attention to melodious point that defies their vernal, offbeat, and frequently lyric affirmative personas.

The Juliana Theory formed in western Pennsylvania in 1997 around vocalist Brett Detar, bassist Chad Alan, guitar player Josh Fiedler, and two other friends. It was in the first place a position stick out for Detar at first due to his commitment as guitarist and major songwriter for metalcore band Zao. Eventually, Detar's poppy position north Korean won over, and he distinct to entrust to the Juliana Theory full-time, amicably exiting Zao.

A split EP with the band Dawson High on Arise Records pronounced the band's recorded debut. Their unrecorded shows were electrical, filled with smile facetiously, bubblegum pop moves -- including the guitarists' predilection for tossing their picks in the air and catching them. Drummer Neil Hebrank and guitar player Josh Kosker were also on base as the Juliana Theory sign a multi-album sell with Seattle-based Tooth & Nail. Their debut uncut, Interpret This Is a Dream, was released on March 23, 1999. It was replete of lackadaisical, impulsive pop songs, but besides hinted at a greater depth that would subsequently be more in full explored.

Simply first base, monumental touring in the album's support was on the plate, with the Juliana Theory share-out stages with many bands and playacting at several national festivals. The band reentered the studio in 2000, number one unleashing a tripartite rent CD with Onelinedrawing and the Gray AM through Onedaysaviour, and next producing the complete, heavily polished, and active Emotion Is Dead album. The Juliana Theory's soph musical composition explored darker depths than their late outings had fey upon, conjuring affectional power ballads and towering rock scorchers through rough-textured layering and incredible harmonies.

Detar began playing tierce guitar more and more in the alive circumstance as the band's fan base increased dramatically. Growing more and more pall of the emo tag and fed up with their bubblegum emo figure and good, the Juliana Theory began maturation yearner hair and written material well more focused compositions. Virtually every major pronounce under the sun became concerned in the group and in 2001, the Juliana Theory signed a recording compress with Epic/Sony. A few dates on the 2001 Warped Tour followed. On October 23 of the like class, the Juliana Theory released vI new songs as the Music from Another Room EP on Tooth & Nail. The songs charted new territory for the quintet, evoking the heroic dynamics of late-'70s prog rockers like Rush, Yes, and Genesis. A round of golf of acting with the similarly minded Movielife and Detar's old match in Zao followed.

The following full-length album, Love, continued this be active away from genre conventions. It showed the isthmus jump into a more mainstream approach without sacrificing its intensity or experimental flourishes. It was too released on Epic, qualification it the official low gear major-label outlet from the isthmus. Epic didn't work out for the Juliana Theory, however, and the set issued a live record album through Tooth & Nail earlier sign language with indie impression Abacus for September 2005's Defaulter Sweetheartbeat. A best-of collection from their years on Tooth and Nail, A Small Noise, appeared in February 2006. That like month, the group officially announced their decision to pick.

Comedian George Carlin dies at 71

Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital, a spokesman said. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica on Sunday evening after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the US Supreme Court.

In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top US court ruled that the words cited in Carlin's routine were indecent, and that the government's broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening.

Carlin's comedic sensibility often came back to a central theme: humanity is doomed.

"I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas," he told Reuters in a 2001 interview.

Carlin, who wrote several books and performed in many television comedy specials, is survived by his wife Sally Wade, and daughter Kelly Carlin McCall.

Roth revels in villain role

Every great  superhero deserves a great villain and even the monstrous behemoth that is the Hulk is no different. Lucky for the producers behind The Incredible Hulk, Hollywoods go-to guy for playing the perfect bad dude was available when they called. Enter Tim Roth.

Having played everything from an evil monkey in Planet Of The Apes to a love struck robber in Pulp Fiction and even earning a coveted Academy Award nomination as the scheming villain in 1995s Rob Roy, Roth has earned a well-deserved reputation as the ideal rapscallion. I dont mind (playing villains) if theyre kind of juicy, Roth recently told me while promoting The Incredible Hulk.

If Im having a good time with it, the audience tends to see that. With The Incredible Hulk, Roth returns to form playing Emil Blonsky, an over-the-hill soldier who craves the thrill of power.  When he purposely gets a greater dose of the same gamma radiation that turned rival Bruce Banner into The Hulk, he quickly takes advantage of his new beastly power one that only the green-skinned superhero can match.

It was a seriously large amount of fun we had making it, says Roth.

But the shoes of his character (The Abomination) are not easy to fill. The history of The Hulk goes back to 1962 when he debuted in comic-book form.

Five years later, The Abomination made its first appearance and has since become one of The Hulks most revered foes.

I was wary of (the fans) because theyre tough, says Roth. But theyve actually gone through the roof.  They love it. And hardcore fans arent the only ones appreciating Roths villainous portrayal. Critics have also been kind to the latest Hulk blockbuster. It might not even be a shock to Roth if he found out the role returned him to, dare I say it, awards territory.

(The Abomination) kind of reminds me of the Rob Roy guy in a way, admits Roth. As clumsily as I play it, its still quite carefully written so its sort of a bad guy experience that the audience can enjoy.

The Incredible Hulk opens today.

Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek's icy musical note and liberal utilization of distance and long tones has farsighted been perfect for the ECM sound and, as a result, he is on many recordings for that mark, both as a leader and as a sideman. He had north Korean won a challenger for amateur malarky players second in 1962, stellar to his first gigs. Garbarek worked steadily in Norway passim the remainder of the 1960s, usually as a leader but besides for four-spot years with George Russell (world Health Organization was in Scandinavia for a long stretch). Garbarek began recording for ECM in the early '70s and, although he had opportunities to toy with Chick Corea and Don Cherry, his connection with Keith Jarrett's European quartet in the mid-'70s made him famous, resulting in the classic recordings My Song and Belonging. In the 1980s, Garbarek's groups included bassist Eberhard Weber and at various multiplication guitarists Bill Frisell and David Torn. Garbarek, whose sound is about unchanged since the 1970s, collaborated with the Hilliard Ensemble in 1993 (a vocal quartet telling Renaissance euphony) and the result was a astonishingly popular recording. Visible World followed in 1995, and little Joe years later on he resurfaced with Rites. In April of 1999, Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble returned with Mnemosyne.
